Abstract
This article is a general synoptic presentation of the expressions of cause in French and German. It highlights the extreme diversity of this relationship; in particular the cause to effect and the explicative cause are studied in their syntactical and semantic behaviour. Various mechanisms linked to metaphor, inference, and utterance are envisaged. Therefore, we can see that the notion of causality in both languages cannot be limited to a single definition.
